I AM ART

OPEN STUDIO ARTS EVENT FOR YOUTH OF NAVAJO NATION:

FORT DEFIANCE, AZ    -    August 11 - 13, 2008

In collaboration with CHART, the Office of Youth Development of Navajo Nation and the local environmental group, Miss Indigenous, a 'creative studio' is planned for the youth of the Navajo Nation.  The project, called "i am art", will provide an opportunity for the indigenous youth to communicate in novel and creative ways.  Some basic elements of art education will be offered along with experimentation in various media including dance, poetry, design and music.

The greater vision of this project includes a future after school program that integrates art education with creative individual and group exploration.  A needs assessment will also be conducted to determine possible roles for the expressive therapies.   'i am art' will be hosted by the Boys and Girls Club of Dine Nation.  Community youth, ages 6 - 18, are invited to participate in workshops, hands-on projects, lessons from guest artists and a finale gallery.

"Our world is at a crossroads, with fear and hatred threatening to destroy the hope essential for healthy living in people of all ages and cultures ... We believe that the arts can be a vital component in the equation for a balanced and happy life.

The arts are a natural therapy for trauma. ... the need to extend the healing power of the arts is more urgent than ever.

The 2004 Asian tsunami devastated Indonesia, Thailand and other countries.

..people understand the importance of providing a safe setting where .. creative potential can blossom.. the arts have been vital in work with those exposed to both natural and man-made traumas.
