The 2008 Sichuan earthquake
which measured at 8.0 occurred on 12 May
2008 in Sichuan province of China. The earthquake was felt as far
away as Beijing (1,500 kilometres (932 mi) away) and Shanghai (1,700
kilometres (1,056 mi) away),and was also felt in nearby countries.
Official figures state that 69,197 are confirmed dead,374,176
injured, with 18,340 listed as missing. The earthquake left about
4.8 million people homeless, though the number could be as high as
11 million.
No government estimate of people needing psychological help has been
released, although the state-run Legal Daily newspaper quoted an
expert as saying they could number as high as 600,000.Teams of
psychologists, psychiatrists and volunteer counselors have gone to
the hardest-hit areas, but the need for psychosocial services on a
vast scale remains.
PTSD+ANGELS is a Beijing-based NGO comprised of artists and
professionals from different fields which has organized to mobilize
psychosocial support for children and youth affected by the
earthquake disaster. They have traveled to Sichuan and provided
assistance to local caregivers and others such as the PLA (People's
Liberation Army) working in the reconstruction and rehabilitation
efforts. They also documented their travels in photographs, some of
which are displayed below.
PTSD+ANGELS understands the power of art therapy in psychosocial
healing and has reached out to various organizations including CHART
for support. CHART is cooperating with PTSD+ANGELS in publicizing
their efforts, helping them raise funds and linking them with other
resources to promote their cause.
